33 Queens dance companies launch Saturday; 2019 Queensboro Dance Festival

Queensboro Dance Festival,

Queensboro Dance Festival is returning to Court Square

The 6th annual Queensboro Dance Festival launches its performance tour throughout the borough May 11-October 6, presenting 33 Queens-based dance companies of all cultures and styles. It is the largest assemblage of Queens dance companies to perform together across Queens’ theaters, parks, plazas, libraries, schools, and street events. Though many of the participating dance groups have been in existence for over a decade, the Queensboro Dance Festival tour will be their first opportunity to perform their work beyond their neighborhood communities, and first time alongside other traditional and contemporary dance forms. The unique cross-exposure and cross-cultural nature of the Queensboro Dance Festival will be an exciting chance for Queens audiences to experience a diverse slice of Queens dance.

The tour consists of 26 shows in 14 different Queens neighborhoods, performing nearly every week throughout their 6-month season. The tour kicks off in their home neighborhood of Long Island City this Saturday May 11th at the annual ‘LIC Springs!’ Sunday Stroll event (free to attend). The Queensboro Dance Festival continues its opening month of performances with a one-night-only show at the Jamaica Performing Arts Center May 17th 7pm ($10 suggested donation), and afternoon performances + dance workshop May 19th 3pm at the annual Bell Blvd. Sunday Stroll in Bayside, Queens (free to attend). Most shows and events are free to the public, with each show featuring a different line-up of participating companies. “It is so inspiring to see more and more dance groups emerge to join the festival,” says festival Executive Director, Karesia Batan. “Often they are not new companies, but they are new to our program, and it’s like discovering another gem in the Queens dance world, and learning about another corner of our borough. We are thrilled to be able to bring these companies’ works throughout Queens!”
