Punk version of Richard III to begin showing at Secret Theater

Richard III

Richard III will begin showing Thursday

A colorful take on the Shakespeare classic Richard III will begin its run Thursday at the Secret Theater at 44-02 23rd Street. The run will go from February 27 to March 15.1

What do I mean by “colorful take?” Here’s the release from the Secret Theater:

The Queens Players began their 2013-14 season with a thrilling Midsummer, and are looking forward to presenting a Punk-infused version of this classic history play featuring Shakespeare’s iconic villain, Richard III.

A scheming sociopath grabs the crown through fratricide, but such extreme measures cannot bring lasting pleasure. Indeed, Richard meets a famously inglorious end at Bosworth.

In this production, The Queens Players substitute the storied courts of England for the gloomier confines of a punk club in England circa 1980s. The character of Richard III will be played by The Queens Players’ Artistic Director Richard Mazda, who comes to the project straight after a homerun performance of Fagin in the Secret’s sold out hit run of Oliver! Alberto Bonilla, The Queens Players’ Associate Artistic Director, will direct.
