A Dunkin Donuts will replace Joy Gourmet at 44-80 21st Street

Joy Gourmet

Joy Gourmet used to occupy the space

Recently, we’ve seen construction crews working on the former home of Joy Gourmet on 44-80 21st Street. The deli closed in February, and has been shuttered ever since.1 The good news is, according to a DOB permit approved on Sept. 8,2 there will be a Dunkin Donuts that will open in that space. Here is the exact language from the permit:

“INTERIOR RENOVATION FOR PROPOSED DUNKIN DONUTS ON FIRST FLOOR. INSTALL NON-LOAD BEARING PARTITIONS, MECHANICAL SYSTEM AND PLUMBING FIXTURES. NO CHANGE IN USE, EGRESS OR OCCUPANCY.”

  1. Good news for whom? We already have plenty of coffee places on every other corner. The only reason it’s a dunkin donuts is because they are willing to pay the over priced rent that is being charged. A restaurant would have been a nicer addition to this part of the neighborhood. Instead we get fast food, which dunkin donuts is. They are no better than McDonalds. That will mean more trash and the high school kids will probably hang out there.

  2. Thomas,
Who do you mean by they? Those of us who live in the immediate area? LA Gourmet as well as Pumpernickel are not open on the weekends and the others are. So yes it is a coffee spot during the week for those who don’t live in the neighborhood. LIC Market is also a coffee spot. I’d rather give my money to an independent business than a chain.
