The Queensboro Dance Festival’s (QDF) 2017 season culminates in performances by 27 all Queens-based cultural and contemporary dance companies at the Secret Theatre, 44-02 23rd St in Long Island City. Shows run Thursday through Sunday, October 5-8. Showtimes are 7:30pm Thursday through Saturday, and 5pm on Sunday. Tickets are $15 online at www.queensborodancefestival.com and $18 at the door. $8 tickets are available for high school students at the door only with valid ID.
Unique to the festival, every dance group presented is from Queens, this year representing 12 different neighborhoods spanning from Astoria to Howard Beach. Over 70% of the dances performed will be Queens premieres, reflecting how the festival is addressing the need for more Queens dance presence in its own borough, and encouraging Queens dance companies to invest in their local audiences. This season features a spectrum of dance styles including Indian Kathak, tap, Chinese Lion Dancing, aerial silks, Japanese, modern, Colombian folk, house, bellydance, Bhangra, and more.
“Each year, more cultural groups are participating in the festival, which has been really exciting,” says Karesia Batan, QDF founder & director. “It’s a different opportunity where Queens-based cultural groups and contemporary dance companies share a platform, and expand each other’s community reach.”
This year’s QDF season is bookended by two major performance runs. The season warmed up with 2 evenings of outdoor performances at the LIC waterfront this past July, and is now culminating in the October 5-8 performances at the Secret Theatre. Between performance runs, QDF offers participating dance companies rehearsal space, free dance classes, networking events, preview performance opportunities in various Queens neighborhoods, and special access to Queens arts institutions.
