Long Island City’s rapid growth has united residents in advocating for a livable city with local holistic healing and self-care solutions, giving an organic rise to the local wellness community.
The newest wellness center in LIC, PRESS Modern Massage, is a local clinical massage studio home to Brooklyn since 2008. Located at 5-14 51st Ave., near the 7-train Vernon Blvd – Jackson Av stop, the Queens studio has 5 treatment rooms, space rentals for local healers, and community events focused on healing and self-care. PRESS is a woman-owned, body-positive studio owned by Greenpoint resident Rachel Beider.
“Urban living has left countless people exhausted and stressed. We’re seeing so many injuries and strains related to modern living, but we have your back, Queens,” said PRESS Modern Massage CEO & Licensed Massage Therapist (LMT) Rachel Beider. “We’re thrilled to join LIC’s wellness community alongside our neighbors like Sacred Waters, Form + Flow, and LIC Community Acupuncture. PRESS has been connecting with local wellness businesses to discuss how we can better serve the community as a whole.”
As a welcome to neighbors, PRESS LIC is offering $20 off any massage for new clients. Massages start at $130/hour and packages are available at a 10% discount. Through newly-formed partnerships, PRESS clients can also receive discounts at nearby wellness centers.
PRESS LIC has added a dozen new jobs, and counting, and is coordinating local volunteer efforts. “As a small business, it’s important for us to invest in our communities, from hiring and buying locally to investing our time and resources with local nonprofits and groups,” said Beider. In March, PRESS was named Brooklyn Hero of the Month by Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams for giving away over $10,000 of free massages for furloughed government workers during the shutdown. “We look forward to bringing the same compassionate, healing energy here by serving and giving back to the LIC community.”
The local massage chain opened in Brooklyn 11 years ago as Massage Williamsburg, a one-treatment room with Beider as the single therapist. Today, PRESS has over 50 staff and 4 locations in Brooklyn and Queens: Williamsburg, Greenpoint, DUMBO, and now LIC. The studios have massaged over 30,000 individual clients.
PRESS offers customized massage sessions for pain- and stress-relief, as well as women’s-focused services like prenatal care and period massages. In 2018, Beider created the reproductive wellness session PRESS Flow, also known as the Moon Cycle Massage, to ease cramps, pain, and tension associated with PMS. “I love working with women in every stage of their cycles, from PMS to pregnancy and beyond,” said Beider. Her first book, Press Here: a Beginner’s Guide to Massage Therapy, was published this year through Quarto Media.
PRESS LIC is open 10am-10pm, 7 days a week, by appointment only. The studio will also offer indoor and outdoor space rentals to local healers. For more information, visit or book online.
